Your Private Transfer From Zurich to Zermatt

Flying into Zurich for a week below the Matterhorn? Our private Zurich to Zermatt transfers meet you in the arrivals hall and drive you 254 km, or 158 miles, to the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, from £605 per vehicle. The drive takes approximately 4 hours in good conditions. Zermatt is car-free, and Zermatt Tourism's arrival guide confirms that private vehicles may only travel as far as Täsch, so the car stops there and a shuttle train takes you on into the village.

The whole route stays inside Switzerland. Your chauffeur leaves Zurich by motorway towards Bern, crosses under the Bernese Alps on the Lötschberg car train between Kandersteg and Goppenstein, then follows the Rhône valley to Visp and climbs the Mattertal to Täsch.

Zermatt is one of the resorts we reach from our Zurich Airport transfers service, part of our wider network of Switzerland destinations.

Whether you are a family with a car full of ski kit, a group heading for a shared chalet, colleagues on a corporate trip, or a traveller who would rather not haul cases through two railway stations, a private car takes the stress out of the longest part of the day. Zermatt is busy in summer too, with hikers and visitors riding up to the Gornergrat, and the same Täsch arrangement applies all year.

If your flight lands in Geneva instead, our Geneva to Zermatt transfers page covers that gateway.

What Your Transfer Includes

  • A private vehicle for your party alone, never shared
  • Meet and greet in arrivals with a name board and help with your luggage
  • Flight monitoring, with your pickup time adjusted if you land late
  • Transfer from Zurich Airport to the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, the road limit for Zermatt
  • Room for skis, snowboards and hard-shell cases alongside your passengers
  • Fixed pricing agreed at the time of booking, with no surcharges on the day
  • One way or return, booked together or separately

The Täsch to Zermatt shuttle is a separate rail leg operated by Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, and its fare is not part of the transfer price.

How Much Is a Zurich to Zermatt Transfer?

A private Zurich to Zermatt transfer costs from £605 per vehicle, one way, for the 254 km drive, which takes approximately 4 hours in good conditions. Because Zermatt is car-free, the car ends at the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, and the shuttle train carries you the last few kilometres.

You pay for the vehicle, not for each passenger. All three classes are priced one way to the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch:

  • Economy Saloon: from £605
  • Business Class Saloon: £833
  • First Class Saloon: £1,092

The price depends on your party, because five people with board bags and boot bags need a bigger vehicle class than two people with a single ski bag each, and on your travel dates. Return journeys, and any arrangement beyond Täsch, are priced when you book.

Groups of four to six flying into Zurich often price the train first, and once the ski bags are counted, one car with all the luggage on board tends to compare well, with nobody guarding skis in a luggage rack.

The fare is agreed at booking, and nothing is added on the day.

The Täsch Handover and Shuttle Train

The last few kilometres to Zermatt are by rail for everyone, and the change at Täsch surprises first-time visitors more than the four hour drive does, so it helps to know how it works before you land.

Why the Transfer Ends at Täsch

Zermatt Tourism states that private vehicles are only allowed as far as Täsch, five kilometres before Zermatt, and that the onward journey is by train, taxi or limousine. That applies to hire cars, taxis and private transfers alike.

The Matterhorn Terminal Täsch

According to Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn's guide to the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, the railway station sits under the same roof as the terminal, and luggage trolleys can be taken with you onto the shuttle train. Your chauffeur brings you to the terminal with all your bags, so your cases and skis go straight from the boot onto a trolley.

The Shuttle Train to Zermatt

The Zermatt Shuttle runs every 20 minutes from 05:55 to 21:55, then every hour in the evening until about 00:30 or 01:00, and all night at weekends, according to Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. The ride takes 12 minutes, and Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn lists the return fare at CHF 17.20. Check the current timetable when you plan, as the operator publishes seasonal changes.

Reaching Your Hotel in Zermatt

Zermatt Tourism lists a free e-bus on two routes, the Ski-Bus and Winkelmatten, as well as electric taxis, horse-drawn carriages and bicycles. Its directory of Zermatt taxi services includes station pickups. All of these are arranged locally in Zermatt, not by us, so ask your hotel before you travel whether it meets guests or collects luggage at the station.

When you book, give us your hotel name and area, and we plan your arrival at Täsch around it.

Meeting Your Chauffeur at Zurich Airport

Arriving at Zurich

Zurich Airport has two arrival areas, Arrival 1 and Arrival 2, and the airport runs information desks in the public area of each, including the Airport Information desk in Arrival 2, open daily from 06:00 to 23:30. Once you have collected your bags, skis and boards, your chauffeur is waiting in arrivals with a name board and helps you with your luggage.

Queues at passport control and the wait for oversized baggage both vary, so we never fix a handover time. Your flight is tracked from departure, and your pickup moves with the time you actually land.

Returning to Zurich Airport

We plan your return backwards from your airline's bag drop deadline, allowing for the drive to Zurich, including the Lötschberg car train and any queue at Goppenstein. Before the car comes the shuttle down from Zermatt to Täsch, so we add a wait of up to 20 minutes, the 12 minute ride and your own trip from the hotel to Zermatt station. With an early morning flight, the first shuttle of the day matters, so we check it against your pickup.

We confirm your pickup time and the meeting place at Täsch before your departure day. Book the return together with the outbound, and both journeys are fixed before you leave home.

Vehicles Built for Ski Gear

A Zermatt week tends to mean more luggage than most ski trips. Many visitors bring smarter clothes for evenings in the village alongside skis, boots and helmets, and every bag has to be lifted out of the car and onto a trolley at Täsch. Fewer, larger bags make that one trolley journey rather than three.

We choose your vehicle around your luggage as well as your headcount. Estate cars suit couples and smaller families with soft ski bags, while larger MPVs and executive minibuses carry groups of six to eight with full equipment.

Tell us at booking how many passengers are travelling and how many ski bags, board bags, boot bags and suitcases you have, plus anything unusually long or heavy, so the vehicle that meets you in Zurich has room for all of it.

Winter Timing Tips

The drive has two stretches where snow matters most: the climb from the Kander valley to the car train at Kandersteg, and the final climb up the Mattertal from Visp to Täsch. We plan pickups with both in mind.

BLS publishes the current waiting time for Kandersteg in its online timetable. Waits can be longer at peak times, so our chauffeurs usually check the BLS waiting time while still on the motorway near Spiez, before the climb to Kandersteg.

Christmas, New Year and February half term fill up early. Book as soon as your flights are confirmed.

A private transfer runs on your flights, any day of the week and at any hour, including late arrivals into Zurich. Both rail links on this route keep timetables, though: the shuttle runs hourly in the evening, and BLS asks drivers to check the car train timetable before setting off. With a late landing, our team plans the route around both when you book.

Winter driving becomes our job rather than yours. There are no Swiss tyre rules to read up on, no vignette to buy and no snow chains to fit in the dark. Your chauffeur drives the route in a vehicle prepared for winter roads. Our guide to seamless transfers from airports to ski resorts explains how we plan Alpine arrivals.

The Zurich to Zermatt Route

From Zurich Airport, Google Maps routes the 253 km drive west on the A1 motorway towards Bern, then south on the A6 towards Spiez. From there the road climbs the Kander valley to Kandersteg, where the car boards the Lötschberg car train. On the far side, the road drops from Goppenstein towards the Rhône valley, joins the A9 to Visp, and then climbs the Mattertal to the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch.

The Lötschberg Car Train

The Lötschberg car train carries cars through the tunnel between Kandersteg and Goppenstein in approximately 15 minutes. BLS, which operates the service, runs it every 30 minutes with extra trains when needed. Reservations are not possible, and tickets are priced per vehicle, covering everyone inside.

You stay in the car for the crossing, and your chauffeur handles the loading at Kandersteg and the drive off at Goppenstein.

There is no border crossing anywhere on the route, and the final stretch from Täsch to Zermatt is by shuttle train.

If your trip also takes in Verbier or the Bernese Oberland, our Geneva to Verbier transfers and Geneva to Grindelwald transfers cover Verbier and Grindelwald from Geneva.

Which Airport Is Best for Zermatt?

Geneva is closer to Zermatt by road, while Zurich makes sense when that is where your best flight lands. Both airports lead to the same handover at the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, so choose the airport with the flight times, fares and departure point that suit your party.

  • Zurich: the airport this page serves, approximately 4 hours by road to Täsch in good conditions.
  • Geneva: a shorter road route of approximately 2 hours 45 minutes in good conditions, with no car train. Our Geneva to Zermatt transfers start from £557 per vehicle, and our Geneva Airport transfers page covers that gateway.
  • Sion: the closest airport, in the Rhône valley, but it has little scheduled traffic and is used mainly for business and private flights. See our Sion Airport page if you are flying privately.
  • Milan Malpensa: a cross-border option, south of the Alps. Our Milan Malpensa Airport page covers it, and transfers from there are priced at booking.

Other Ways to Reach Zermatt

By Train

The train is the quicker way to reach the village itself. The SBB timetable shows direct trains from Zurich Airport station to Visp, with one change there onto the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn for Zermatt, in about 3 hours 31 minutes. Other connections change at Bern as well. Zermatt Tourism gives about three and a half hours from Zurich Airport, with trains every half hour, and notes that the SBB luggage service can send bags through to Zermatt.

By car, the whole journey comes to around 4 hours 30 minutes once the shuttle is added, so the train wins on time. Rail suits one or two people with light bags, rail pass holders and daytime arrivals. A private car wins for families with several bags each, groups with ski kit, very early or late flights and children who are already tired, because the only change is the one at Täsch.

Shared Shuttles and Taxis

A shared transfer can cost less per person, but the vehicle waits to fill and stops for other passengers along the way. A taxi from the airport rank is possible too, though on a journey this long, agree the fare before you set off. Both end at Täsch.

Hire Car

A hire car can only go as far as Täsch as well, where you park it for the week and take the shuttle with your luggage. The vignette, the car train ticket and parking at Täsch are all yours to arrange. Zermatt Tourism's arrival guide covers parking at Täsch in detail.

Local Rules on the Road to Zermatt

France's Loi Montagne does not apply in Switzerland.

Winter Driving in Switzerland

The Swiss government's ch.ch guidance on winter tyres states that there is no legal obligation to fit winter tyres, but drivers must always keep control of their vehicle. The Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) adds that driving on summer tyres in winter conditions counts as unroadworthy and is punishable, and that after a collision a fine and a claim from the insurer can follow. TCS recommends tyres marked with the three peak mountain snowflake.

Snow chains are only compulsory where a sign requires them. TCS guidance on snow chains says that rule covers four wheel drive vehicles too, unless the sign exempts them.

The Swiss Motorway Vignette

Most of this route is on Swiss motorways, which need a vignette if you drive yourself. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security sets the price at CHF 40, as a windscreen sticker or an e-vignette, valid for 14 months. The 2026 vignette runs from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027.

Parking at Täsch

Zermatt Tourism lists 2,100 covered spaces at the Matterhorn Terminal and over 1,000 more with private providers. That matters only if you drive yourself. Travelling with us, you step out at the terminal with your bags.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the transfer take me all the way to Zermatt?

No. Zermatt is car-free, so every road journey stops at the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, five kilometres short of the village. Zermatt Tourism confirms that private vehicles are only allowed as far as Täsch. From the terminal, Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn's shuttle train takes 12 minutes to reach Zermatt.

How long does it take to get from Zurich Airport to Zermatt?

Allow around 4 hours 30 minutes in total. The drive to Täsch takes approximately 4 hours in good conditions, including the Lötschberg car train. Add a wait of up to 20 minutes and the 12 minute shuttle ride, then the short trip from Zermatt station to your hotel.

How do I get from Täsch to Zermatt with ski bags and luggage?

Take the shuttle train from inside the terminal. Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn says luggage trolleys can go onto the train with you, and daytime shuttles run every 20 minutes. Zermatt Tourism's taxi directory also lists local services that run between Täsch and Zermatt.

Is the Täsch to Zermatt train ticket included in the transfer?

No. The transfer price covers the road journey from Zurich Airport to the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch. The shuttle train is a separate service run by Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, so buy your ticket at the terminal or check current fares with Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn before you travel.

Is it better to take the train from Zurich Airport to Zermatt?

It depends on your party and your luggage. The train, about 3 hours 31 minutes with one change at Visp, suits one or two light travellers arriving in daytime. A private car suits families, groups with ski kit and late or early flights, with a single change at Täsch.

Is Zurich or Geneva better for Zermatt?

Geneva is closer by road, at approximately 2 hours 45 minutes to Täsch in good conditions, against approximately 4 hours from Zurich. Zurich is the better choice when it gives you the better flight. Both routes end at the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, and our Geneva to Zermatt page covers the alternative.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Your pickup moves with your flight. We monitor it from departure, so your chauffeur is waiting in arrivals when you actually land. There is no need to call us or change the booking, even if a late landing means a later run through the Bernese Oberland.
