Private airport transfers to and from Sapporo New Chitose Airport
New Chitose Airport (IATA: CTS) is the principal international gateway to Hokkaido, Japan's vast and spectacular northern island, located approximately 40 kilometres south of Sapporo city in Chitose. The airport operates two terminals, the Domestic Terminal directly connected to central Sapporo by the JR Rapid Airport train in 37 minutes, and the International Terminal serving routes across Asia and beyond, linked to the Domestic Terminal by a covered pedestrian bridge taking around ten minutes to cross. Awarded Skytrax's World's Most Improved Airport for 2024, CTS handled a record number of international arrivals as tourism across Hokkaido reached new highs. International flights serve primarily Asian routes, with passengers arriving from South Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand and beyond. Given Hokkaido's size and the wide range of destinations passengers travel to, from the ski slopes of Niseko to the thermal springs of Noboribetsu, a private transfer from CTS removes all uncertainty and delivers you directly to your destination from the moment you land.

Meeting your driver at Sapporo New Chitose Airport
Arrivals
International arrivals are processed in the International Terminal. After clearing quarantine, immigration on 2F, baggage claim and customs, you will exit into the International Arrivals Lobby on 2F. Your Airport Executive driver will be waiting in the 2F Arrivals Lobby holding a name board with your name clearly displayed. The lobby is directly accessible after the customs exit and is where taxi and ground transport facilities are also located. For domestic arrivals into the Domestic Terminal, the Arrivals Lobby is on 1F. Please confirm at the time of booking whether your flight arrives into the International or Domestic Terminal, as the two buildings are connected by a pedestrian bridge rather than being part of the same structure.
Departures
For international departures, your driver will drop you at the kerbside set-down area outside the International Terminal. Departures check-in is on the 3F Departures Lobby of the International Terminal. For domestic departures, the drop-off is outside the Domestic Terminal, with check-in on 2F. Your driver will assist with luggage at the kerbside before you proceed inside.
Airport Extras Available at Sapporo New Chitose Airport
- Lounges: The International Terminal has internet lounges on 3F and 4F airside, available free of charge during flight operating hours. The domestic side is considerably better equipped, with the Domestic Terminal's upper floors offering a range of paid and airline-operated lounges. JAL and ANA lounges are accessible to eligible business class passengers and frequent flyer members in the Domestic Terminal.
- Dining and shopping: New Chitose Airport is exceptional by any international standard for its food and retail offering, particularly in the Domestic Terminal. The 3F Hokkaido Ramen Dojo brings together ten mini-branches of ramen shops from across Hokkaido, making it one of the finest spots in Japan to try regional ramen styles before departing. The Streetcar Dining District on the same floor serves soup curry, fresh seafood bowls and other Hokkaido specialties. The terminal also houses small branches of Muji and Uniqlo, a Pokémon store, a chocolate wonderland facility and extensive Hokkaido souvenir and fresh seafood counters.
- New Chitose Airport Onsen: One of the airport's most remarkable facilities is the rooftop hot spring on the 4F of the Domestic Terminal, open daily and accessible before security. It offers indoor and outdoor baths, relaxation rooms and guest rooms for overnight stays. For passengers arriving after a long flight or departing early in the morning, this is a genuinely restorative option unique to this airport.
- Cinema: Japan's first airport cinema is located on 4F of the Domestic Terminal, with three screens and 3D capability, open daily from 9:00 AM to midnight.
- Currency exchange and ATMs: Currency exchange counters are located in the International Terminal Arrivals Lobby and Departures area, open according to flight schedules. Two further counters are available in the Domestic Terminal on 1F. ATMs accepting international cards are available throughout both terminals. Withdrawing yen on arrival is strongly recommended given Japan's cash-reliant culture.
- Luggage forwarding: Yamato Transport luggage forwarding services are available in both terminals, allowing passengers to send bags directly to hotels across Sapporo, Niseko, Furano and other Hokkaido destinations. This is particularly practical for ski travellers who want to travel unburdened from the airport to their resort.
Airport Timing Tips
International arrivals
From landing to exiting the International Arrivals Lobby, allow between 30 and 60 minutes under normal conditions. New Chitose's International Terminal is relatively compact compared to Japan's major hubs, and immigration tends to move efficiently. Completing the Visit Japan Web pre-registration and obtaining a QR code before your flight is strongly recommended and can materially reduce processing time. Electronic customs declaration via e-Gates is also available at CTS. The busiest periods are when multiple Asian regional flights arrive simultaneously, typically during peak ski season from December to February and during summer holiday windows in July and August. During these windows, allow toward the upper end of the range. Note also that bulky sports equipment such as snowboards and ski bags can add time to baggage claim during ski season.
Domestic arrivals
Domestic arrivals at the Domestic Terminal are processed without immigration or customs. From landing to the 1F Arrivals Lobby typically takes between 15 and 25 minutes. The JR Rapid Airport train from B1F reaches Sapporo Station in 37 minutes, but if you are being met by a private driver the pickup will be at the 1F Arrivals Lobby of the Domestic Terminal.
Departures
For international departures, plan to arrive at the International Terminal at least three hours before your scheduled departure. The International Terminal is smaller than Japan's main hubs but the security checkpoint is a single lane, and during peak ski and summer periods queues can build. For domestic departures from the Domestic Terminal, arriving 90 minutes to two hours before departure is generally sufficient, though peak holiday windows warrant earlier arrival.
Avoid known traffic bottlenecks
The main road route between New Chitose Airport and Sapporo is via the Hokkaido Expressway, with a typical journey time of around 50 to 70 minutes. Road conditions in Hokkaido are significantly affected by winter weather. Heavy snowfall from December through March can reduce visibility and road speeds on the expressway, and journey times can extend substantially during blizzard conditions. For ski resort destinations such as Niseko and Furano, road conditions in mid-winter are a critical planning factor and should be monitored before departure. During peak ski season weekends, the main roads toward Niseko in particular can become congested with resort-bound traffic. Building in additional time during winter travel is always advisable.

FAQs
How far in advance should I book my Sapporo Airport taxi?
During peak ski season (December to March) and the summer holiday period (July to August), we strongly recommend booking at least one week in advance. Demand for private transfers from CTS to Niseko, Furano and other resort destinations is exceptionally high during these windows and availability reduces quickly. For travel at other times of year, 48 to 72 hours notice is generally sufficient. Passengers travelling with ski equipment or large groups should book early to ensure the right vehicle is available.
Where will my driver meet me at Sapporo Airport?
For international arrivals, your driver will be waiting in the 2F Arrivals Lobby of the International Terminal, holding a name board with your name clearly displayed. This is immediately after the customs exit. For domestic arrivals, your driver will be in the 1F Arrivals Lobby of the Domestic Terminal. Please confirm your arrival terminal at the time of booking. Our support team is available 24 hours a day if you have any difficulty locating your driver.
How long does it take to get through security at Sapporo Airport?
For international departures, allow three hours before your scheduled departure. The International Terminal has a single security checkpoint lane, and during peak ski and summer seasons queues can build. For domestic departures from the Domestic Terminal, arriving 90 minutes to two hours before departure is generally sufficient, though peak windows warrant the full two hours.
How long does it take to clear customs and baggage at Sapporo Airport?
International arrivals should allow between 30 and 60 minutes from landing to exiting the Arrivals Lobby. New Chitose's International Terminal processes passengers more quickly than Japan's larger airports under normal conditions. Completing the Visit Japan Web pre-registration and obtaining a QR code for immigration and customs before your flight is strongly recommended. Electronic customs e-Gates are available at CTS. During peak ski and summer periods, allow toward the upper end of the range. Passengers travelling with ski equipment or sports bags should budget additional time for bulky baggage collection.
Will the driver have my details?
Yes. Your driver receives your full booking details before they set off, including your name, flight number, pickup location and any notes you have added. You will also receive your driver's name and contact number ahead of your journey, so you always know exactly who to expect.
Can I contact the driver directly?
Yes. Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive your driver's direct contact details. You are welcome to reach out to them at any point before or during your journey. Our support team is also available around the clock if you need assistance at any stage.
Is there a backup plan if things go wrong?
Absolutely. Every booking is supported by our operations team, who monitor journeys and are on hand to resolve any issues quickly. In the unlikely event of a problem with your assigned vehicle, we maintain a network of backup drivers to ensure your transfer goes ahead without disruption.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
We track every flight in real time. If your flight is delayed, your driver's arrival time is automatically adjusted to match your updated landing time. You will not be charged waiting fees as a result of a delay, and you do not need to contact us to let us know. We will already be aware and responding accordingly.
What happens if I need to cancel last minute?
Our cancellation policy is clearly outlined at the time of booking, with no hidden clauses. For cancellations made with reasonable notice, a full refund is provided. If your plans change unexpectedly, please contact our team as early as possible and we will do everything we can to accommodate you.
Is it possible to request a female driver?
Yes, you can make this request at the time of booking. We will do our best to accommodate you. While we cannot guarantee availability in every case, we treat every request with care and will always confirm whether we are able to fulfil it before your journey.
Am I expected to tip the driver?
Tipping is entirely at your discretion. Our drivers are professionally employed and fairly compensated, so there is no obligation or expectation. If you feel your driver delivered an exceptional experience, a tip is always appreciated, but never assumed.
What size car do I need?
Our booking process guides you through vehicle selection based on passenger numbers and luggage. As a general guide, a saloon is ideal for up to three passengers with standard luggage, an estate suits four passengers with larger bags, and our people carriers comfortably accommodate groups of up to eight. If you are unsure, our team is happy to advise.
Does the taxi have child seats?
Yes. Child seats are available on request and should be specified at the time of booking so your driver can prepare accordingly. Please include the age and approximate weight of any children travelling so we can ensure the correct seat is provided.
