Tokyo Narita Airport Taxi Transfers, Private Airport Cars

Private airport transfers to and from Tokyo Narita Airport

Narita International Airport (IATA: NRT) is Japan's primary long-haul gateway, located approximately 60 kilometres east of central Tokyo in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture. The airport handles over 39 million passengers annually across three terminals, with Terminal 1 serving Star Alliance carriers including ANA, Terminal 2 serving JAL and SkyTeam airlines, and Terminal 3 operating as a low-cost carrier hub. Narita connects Tokyo to over 100 destinations worldwide and remains the first point of entry into Japan for the majority of long-haul international travellers arriving from Europe, North America and the Middle East. Given its distance from central Tokyo, the right transfer from NRT makes a meaningful difference to how your journey begins. A private car with Airport Executive removes the complexity of Japan's rail network and delivers you directly to your destination, without changes, shared vehicles or uncertainty.

Why choose Airport Executive for transfers to and from NRT

Meeting your driver at Tokyo Narita Airport

Arrivals

All three terminals at Narita process arrivals on the first floor (1F). After clearing immigration, collecting your baggage and passing through customs, you will exit into the Arrival Lobby on 1F. Your Airport Executive driver will be waiting in the Arrival Lobby of your terminal, holding a name board with your name clearly displayed. This applies to Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Please confirm your arrival terminal when you receive your booking details, as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 serve different airlines and the terminals are not within walking distance of each other. A free shuttle bus connects all three terminals if you need to transfer between them.

Departures

Your driver will drop you at the kerbside set-down area on the ground floor outside your departure terminal. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 both have clearly signposted vehicle drop-off zones directly outside the terminal entrance. For Terminal 1, departures check-in is on the 4th floor. For Terminal 2, check-in is on the 3rd floor. Your driver will assist with luggage at the kerbside before you proceed inside.

Airport Extras Available at Tokyo Narita Airport

  • Lounges: Terminals 1 and 2 both have airside lounges accessible to passengers regardless of cabin class via Priority Pass and other lounge membership programmes. The International Airport Service Systems (IASS) operates four lounges across the two terminals. Terminal 3 has no passenger lounge facilities. Airline lounges for ANA and JAL are available to eligible business, first class and frequent flyer members in their respective terminals.
  • Dining: Terminal 1's 5th floor and Terminal 2's 4th floor both have dedicated restaurant and shopping zones. Terminal 3 is home to the largest airport food court in Japan, with a wide selection of Japanese and international options. Options range from ramen and sushi counters to international fast food and sit-down restaurants, with most airside venues open from early morning until the last departure.
  • Duty-free and shopping: Extensive duty-free shopping is available airside in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, covering cosmetics, spirits, electronics, Japanese confectionery and luxury goods. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 both have observation decks where you can watch aircraft movements before your flight.
  • Luggage storage and forwarding: Coin lockers and staffed luggage storage are available on multiple floors in Terminals 1 and 2. Yamato Transport operates luggage forwarding counters in both terminals, allowing passengers to send bags directly to hotels across Tokyo and beyond, a particularly useful service for those continuing on to multiple destinations.
  • Currency exchange: Currency exchange counters are available in the arrivals lobbies and departure areas of all three terminals. ATMs accepting international cards are located throughout. Japan remains a cash-heavy country and withdrawing yen at the airport before heading into the city is strongly recommended.

Airport Timing Tips

International arrivals

From landing to exiting the arrivals lobby at Narita, allow between 60 and 90 minutes as a realistic range. Immigration processing time is the main variable. Completing the Visit Japan Web registration before your flight and obtaining a QR code for both immigration and customs significantly reduces processing time and is strongly recommended. During peak arrival windows, particularly the mid-afternoon bank between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM when multiple long-haul flights from Europe and North America land simultaneously, immigration queues can extend to 90 minutes or beyond. Early morning arrivals and late evening arrivals outside the main banks tend to clear more quickly. Your Airport Executive driver will be tracking your flight throughout and will adjust accordingly.

Departures

For international departures from Narita, plan to arrive at least three hours before your scheduled departure. Check-in, security and departure immigration are all manageable under normal conditions within this window, but Narita's size and the volume of international traffic means that peak periods require the full three hours. Japan's Golden Week (late April to early May), Obon (mid-August) and the New Year window (late December to early January) are the busiest periods and can add 30 to 60 minutes to the process. The airport's Face Express facial recognition system at departure immigration is available to eligible passengers and can reduce processing time meaningfully.

Avoid known traffic bottlenecks

The primary road route from central Tokyo to Narita is via the Higashi-Kanto Expressway, with journey times typically running between 60 and 90 minutes depending on traffic. The Wangan Route via the Metropolitan Expressway can offer an alternative during particularly heavy congestion. Rush hour on weekdays between 7:30 and 9:30 AM and again between 5:00 and 8:00 PM adds meaningful time to the journey, particularly from central Tokyo and the eastern wards. The approach road to the airport itself can slow during Golden Week and Obon when outbound holiday traffic is at its heaviest. For early morning departures, particularly those before 9:00 AM, allow an additional 30 to 45 minutes over the standard journey time to account for expressway congestion.

Book your Tokyo Narita Airport transfer

From door to terminal, or terminal to door, we'll be there. Quietly, professionally, and always ready to make the journey feel better.

Narita is a long way from Tokyo, and after a transatlantic or long-haul flight the last thing you need is to navigate Japan's rail network with your luggage. We take care of that transition so your time in Japan can begin the right way.

Top Attractions around Tokyo Narita Airport

Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple, approximately 15 minutes from Narita Airport

One of the most visited temples in Japan, Naritasan Shinsho-ji is a working Buddhist temple dating to 940 AD, situated in Narita City just a short drive from the airport. The sprawling temple complex includes several ornate halls, a three-storey pagoda, traditional gardens and one of the most atmospheric temple streets in the country, lined with eel restaurants and souvenir shops. For passengers with a long layover or arriving a day early before continuing into Tokyo, Naritasan makes for an exceptional and unhurried first impression of Japan.

Tokyo City Centre, approximately 60 minutes from Narita Airport

Despite being further from the city than Haneda, Narita connects efficiently to central Tokyo by private car via the expressway in around 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Key districts including Shinjuku, Shibuya, Marunouchi and Ginza are all within this range. For first-time visitors to Japan, a private transfer from the airport into central Tokyo provides an uninterrupted introduction to the city's scale and energy, without the pressure of navigating train connections after a long flight.

Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple, approximately 70 minutes from Narita Airport

Tokyo's most characterful neighbourhood, Asakusa is home to Senso-ji Temple, the city's oldest and most celebrated place of worship, along with traditional craft markets, rickshaws and street food that evoke an earlier Tokyo. The drive from Narita via the expressway is direct and straightforward, making Asakusa a practical first stop for travellers wanting to arrive in Tokyo and immediately encounter something genuinely worth seeing.

Hakone, approximately 2 hours from Narita Airport

A mountain resort town south-west of Tokyo, Hakone is one of Japan's most beloved overnight destinations, known for its onsen hot springs, views of Mount Fuji and the Hakone Open Air Museum. The drive from Narita by private car takes approximately two hours via central Tokyo and the Tomei Expressway. For travellers on a structured itinerary who would prefer to head directly to a ryokan rather than check into a city hotel first, a transfer from Narita to Hakone is a particularly rewarding option.

Nikko, approximately 90 minutes from Narita Airport

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in the mountains north of Tokyo, Nikko is home to the Tosho-gu Shrine complex and the surrounding national park, which includes waterfalls, lakeside scenery and traditional accommodation. The drive from Narita is around 90 minutes via the Ken-O Expressway, making it one of the more direct routes from the airport to a major cultural destination outside Tokyo. For passengers with a flexible arrival day who wish to see Japan beyond the city, Nikko is among the most rewarding first stops.

Yokohama, approximately 75 minutes from Narita Airport

Japan's second-largest city sits south of Tokyo and is reachable from Narita in around 75 minutes by private car. The Minato Mirai waterfront district, Chinatown and the Sankeien Garden are among the highlights. Yokohama is a popular base for business travellers and those seeking a quieter alternative to central Tokyo, with excellent transport links into the city.

Kamakura, approximately 90 minutes from Narita Airport

A coastal town known for the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in and an extensive network of Zen temples set among wooded hillsides, Kamakura offers a distinct and reflective experience from central Tokyo. The drive from Narita via the expressway takes around 90 minutes under normal conditions. For travellers arriving with a longer itinerary and a day to spare before heading into the city, Kamakura makes an excellent and unhurried introduction to traditional Japan.

Odaiba, approximately 70 minutes from Narita Airport

An artificial island in Tokyo Bay with a futuristic skyline, teamLab digital art installations, shopping and views back toward the Rainbow Bridge and central Tokyo, Odaiba offers a very different side of the city. It is particularly well suited to families and those with an interest in contemporary Japanese design and technology. The drive from Narita brings you directly onto the island without additional connections.

Mount Fuji and Fuji Five Lakes, approximately 2 hours from Narita Airport

The iconic summit of Mount Fuji and the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes region are approximately two hours from Narita by private car. The area offers lake-side ryokan stays, onsen facilities and closer views of the mountain itself from Kawaguchiko. For passengers beginning a wider Japan itinerary, travelling directly from Narita to the Fuji area before heading into Tokyo is a logical and scenic choice.

Chiba City, approximately 30 minutes from Narita Airport

The prefectural capital of Chiba sits closer to Narita than central Tokyo and offers a more understated but genuinely enjoyable urban experience, with waterfront dining along Tokyo Bay, the Chiba Port Tower and a compact city centre. For business travellers with meetings in the Chiba area or passengers needing an overnight stop close to the airport before an early morning departure, Chiba City is a practical and often-overlooked option.

FAQs

How far in advance should I book my Narita Airport taxi?

For travel during Japan's peak holiday periods, including Golden Week (late April to early May), the Obon festival (mid-August) and the New Year window (late December to early January), we recommend booking at least one week in advance. These periods see exceptionally high demand for private transfers from Narita, particularly for the longer runs into central Tokyo. For standard travel periods, 48 to 72 hours notice is generally sufficient. Travellers on early morning departures or arriving on late night long-haul flights are encouraged to book as far ahead as possible to secure their preferred vehicle.

Where will my driver meet me at Narita Airport?

Your driver will be waiting in the Arrival Lobby on the 1st floor (1F) of your arrival terminal, holding a name board with your name clearly displayed. This applies to Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. The meeting point is immediately after the customs exit in each terminal. Please confirm your terminal at the time of booking, as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 serve different airlines and are not within walking distance of each other. Our support team is available 24 hours a day if you have any difficulty locating your driver.

How long does it take to get through security at Narita Airport?

For international departures from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, security processing under normal conditions takes between 20 and 40 minutes. During Golden Week, Obon and the New Year window, allow an additional 30 to 60 minutes. Arriving three hours before an international departure is strongly recommended. Japan has introduced facial recognition departure immigration via the Face Express system, which can meaningfully reduce processing time for eligible passengers.

How long does it take to clear customs and baggage at Narita Airport?

International arrivals should allow between 60 and 90 minutes from landing to exiting the arrivals lobby. Immigration is the main variable. Completing the Visit Japan Web registration before your flight and obtaining a QR code for both immigration and customs is strongly recommended and can significantly reduce wait times. Peak arrival windows between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, when multiple long-haul flights from Europe and North America land simultaneously, see the longest queues. Early morning and late evening arrivals outside these banks are typically faster. Your Airport Executive driver will be monitoring your flight and adjusting their timing throughout.

Will the driver have my details?

Yes. Your driver receives your full booking details before they set off, including your name, flight number, pickup location and any notes you have added. You will also receive your driver's name and contact number ahead of your journey, so you always know exactly who to expect.

Can I contact the driver directly?

Yes. Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive your driver's direct contact details. You are welcome to reach out to them at any point before or during your journey. Our support team is also available around the clock if you need assistance at any stage.

Is there a backup plan if things go wrong?

Absolutely. Every booking is supported by our operations team, who monitor journeys and are on hand to resolve any issues quickly. In the unlikely event of a problem with your assigned vehicle, we maintain a network of backup drivers to ensure your transfer goes ahead without disruption.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We track every flight in real time. If your flight is delayed, your driver's arrival time is automatically adjusted to match your updated landing time. You will not be charged waiting fees as a result of a delay, and you do not need to contact us to let us know. We will already be aware and responding accordingly.

What happens if I need to cancel last minute?

Our cancellation policy is clearly outlined at the time of booking, with no hidden clauses. For cancellations made with reasonable notice, a full refund is provided. If your plans change unexpectedly, please contact our team as early as possible and we will do everything we can to accommodate you.

Is it possible to request a female driver?

Yes, you can make this request at the time of booking. We will do our best to accommodate you. While we cannot guarantee availability in every case, we treat every request with care and will always confirm whether we are able to fulfil it before your journey.

Am I expected to tip the driver?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion. Our drivers are professionally employed and fairly compensated, so there is no obligation or expectation. If you feel your driver delivered an exceptional experience, a tip is always appreciated, but never assumed.

What size car do I need?

Our booking process guides you through vehicle selection based on passenger numbers and luggage. As a general guide, a saloon is ideal for up to three passengers with standard luggage, an estate suits four passengers with larger bags, and our people carriers comfortably accommodate groups of up to eight. If you are unsure, our team is happy to advise.

Does the taxi have child seats?

Yes. Child seats are available on request and should be specified at the time of booking so your driver can prepare accordingly. Please include the age and approximate weight of any children travelling so we can ensure the correct seat is provided.
